I have concluded that it's better to be referred to sarcastically than it is ironically. For example, it's better to have someone say about you, "Oh yeah, he's a real genius" (sarcastic comment) than it would be to have them ask, "He's a genius?" (irony-infused question). That first snide comment seems less insulting than the second realization.
This came about from a conversation I once had with my wife. You should not read anything into that at all.
